Shadow Circus

In this tutorial I used the awesome art of Amy Brown.
You need a license to use Amy’s art, available at Creative Design Outlet.

The kit I used was inspired by this tube, 81-2 and is by
The kit is also available at Creative Design Outlet.

You will also need a mask,

For the animation you will need Animation Shop and

Font of choice.

Don’t forget to sharpen up those elements after resizing/rotating, otherwise they will look a little blurry; check out my Tips and Tricks page for more info.

Unless otherwise stated, I used a drop shadow of vertical 0, horizontal 5, opacity 85, blur 10.

Open a new transparent canvas, 650 by 600 pixels and flood fill with white.

Open pp1 and copy, make a new layer on your canvas, select all, paste the paper into the selection, deselect and apply the mask.  Resize 85%.

Open el16, paste as a new layer and resize 75%.  Open pp1 again and copy, select the interior of the element with your magic wand and expand the selection by 10, make a new layer below it, paste the paper into the selection, deselect and apply the drop shadow to the frame.

Open el17 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open el10 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 45%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open el11 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 80%, place in position and apply the drop shadow. Repeat the drop shadow changing the horizontal to -5).

Open your tube and paste as a new layer, resize as needed, place in position and apply the drop shadow (remember to change the setting back).  I resized my tube 65%.

Open el4 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 80% and rotate 90 degrees to the right, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open el18 and paste as a new layer.   Mirror, resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open el12 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 75% and duplicate.  Flip one leaf and mirror the other, place both in position and apply the drop shadow to each.

Open el4 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 80%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open el19 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 75% and duplicate, resize the duplicate 80%, place both flowers into position and apply the drop shadow to each then drag up el4 so it’s between them.

Open el5 and paste as a new layer making sure its on the top.   Resize 65% and place into position, apply the drop shadow but changing the horizontal to 2 and blur to 3.

Open el13 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 70% and flip, place in position and apply the last drop shadow.

Open el15 and paste as a new layer.   Resize 60% and rotate 10 degrees to the right, place in position and apply the drop shadow (remember to change the settings back).

Open el6 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 75%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Open el9 and paste as a new layer.   Mirror, resize 60%, place in position and apply the drop shadow.

Check the positions of your layers and make any necessary adjustments.

Open el20 and paste as a new layer.  Resize 50% and rotate 10 degrees to the right, drag right down until its just above the mask layer and place in position in the top, right hand corner, duplicate and move the duplicate down so just a little shows at the bottom of the tag, drag it down below the original layer and merge the top layer down onto the bottom layer then apply the drop shadow.

Once again, check the positions of your layers and when you are happy, crop your tag and add your copyright information and text.  If you are not continuing with the animation, export your tag as a jpeg with compression set to 5 or on a transparent background as a png.

Animation:

Click on the paper layer that is inside el16 and duplicate.  Apply Greg’s Factory OutletII Pool Shadow on the default settings.

Right click on your tag and “Copy Merged”, paste in animation shop “As a New Animation”.

Back in Paint Shop, close off the duplicate paper layer you made and copy merged again, in Animation Shop “Paste Before Current Frame”.  Change the animation speed on both frames to 35 (Animation – Frame Properties), then put through the Optimization Wizard and save as a gif.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, I certainly enjoyed writing it!  If you have any questions, you can email me here and don't forget to send me your result, I love to see them and include them in the gallery!
